Cycling Skills Clinic

Weather permitting: Brian Walton, Colin Sandberg (both of Cadence Cycling) and I will be at Great Valley, 5:00 p.m. this Thursday, June 24 to offer some riding and bike handling tips to riders of all abilities.

As with any training ride/race such as the Drives, Greentree, Airport Crit or Great Valley these rides have riders of varying abilities, trying to accomplish different training and with this mix, the potential for mishaps goes up.  As our fitness level increases our inabilities become magnified, sadly some bad things can happen to even the most seasoned of riders by an avoidable mistake.

So we have decided to put together a bike handling clinic so all riders can benefit from the group rides that have been going on for over 40 years in some cases.
Topics planned:
1. Paceline riding – how to pull through, off and get back on without messing up the rotation without wasting yourself or doing something sketchy
2. Pack movement – how to get around in the field at the right time and in the right way.
3. Spacial awareness – be in tune to the nuances of the pack and respond appropriately.
4. Cornering – Sighting and Body Position.

Cost: $0

We figure this will be a method to help any rider, regardless of ability level become better. Veteran riders, feel free to stop in and lend a hand; even Ferarri’s need a polish and tune-up. Treat yourself and pay back to the sport you love. Oh yeah, this should help our precious little “GV” remain safe.

Riders -come with any questions you can think of and be ready to ride. I suspect we’ll get in a solid 30 minutes of riding with the remainder for “classroom” instruction. If there is a substantial turnout, 15+ riders, we may split up into smaller groups for time and instruction efficiency.

Great Valley Training Crit will then commence, we have no power to stop it, at 6:00 p.m. like usual. Put your new information into practice.
Stephan will be in his AXA Equitable and Colin and I will have on Cadence Gear.

See you out there.

ps -Park in the outside lot just past turn four (Near Brandywine Children’s House labeled on googlemaps. I will post map link on the “wall.” Look for the two porto-johns that GVpkway provides for us. Be respectful.

Pump Track Update

Apologies for the delay.  I did attend the New Hanover Township Recreation Board meeting June 2nd.  I presented the idea and they ate it up!

Since the spot is already dedicated for BMX they told me it was no problem and that they would LOVE to have someone/group of people maintain the space.  I was even asked if I had interest in the few acres set up as a Frisbee golf course, which is adjacent to the track.  It’s rarely used and getting overgrown.  Can you say, “trail options??”

Realizing the amount of work I am getting into I need to make sure I have enough support for the project.  Bottom line: if this is going to happen I want to do it right!  I told them I would be back for the August meeting to present an updated proposal.

Prior to the meeting I downloaded a great Pump Track build manual and resource from Pump Track Nation.  Lots of good stuff on the website and the manual was worth the small fee.

Things I need to do:

1. Visit Chambersburg Pump Track for reconnaissance riding.

2. Visit Alexandria Pump Track for reconnaissance riding

3.  Talk to whomever I can (probably people that created and maintain Chambersburg and Alexandria) for insights and track or trail building tips.

4. Take down names of people that can help with: Labor/Bobcat/Topsoil/Labor/Water/Labor and more Labor.

5. Decide if this is all feasible.

If this goes forward, and I hope it does, time line for completion will be next Summer (May or June 2011).  This doesn’t mean that some digging or designing can’t or won’t begin this year.  I can then build a website dedicated for the Pump Track, recruit help from the Cub & Boy Scouts, have the township mail out track building days to the community and etc…

Let me know if you would like to join me on the recon missions.  No dates set just yet, but would like to coordinate asap. Some good people have already offered shovel time.  If would like to join us to provide labor, education or the other items mentioned please email me at

Get out there.
